What Is It Like?

All Medical Restorative Massage Therapy® (MRMT) at the M. T. Wellness Clinic is completed in private, comfortable rooms.

The MRMT process begins with a thorough, detailed assessment of each patient's condition.  In this process, the therapist will review your health history, discuss the exact nature of your pain or loss of physical function, observe your posture, and conduct a hands-on assessment.  During the hands-on assessment, the patient may be asked to walk, stand, bend or move a particular body part in order to facilitate the process.

Throughout the assessment process, the therapist is also looking for "red flag" issues, which are underlying medical issues that may affect or limit the patient's plan of care, or that may even require immediate medical care from a physician.  In the event that a red flag issue is detected, the therapist will advise the patient immediately, and recommend an appropriate course of action.

Upon completion of the assessment process, the patient is positioned by the therapist on a massage table, or in a massage chair if appropriate, and the patient's position will change throughout the treatment.  For example, after the assessment you may initially be positioned on your stomach, and then transition as directed by the therapist to lie on your side and / or back.  You may also use a pillow "wedge" or other type of pillow to achieve a particular position required by the therapy.  This process may be repeated several times as the treatment progresses.

While you are on the table or in the chair, you will likely experience both passive and active Medical Restorative Massage Therapy® techniques, and you will be asked to participate throughout the treatment process.  You will also be communicating with your therapist by answering questions and by providing feedback throughout your appointment.

Passive pain management techniques involve the therapist doing all the work.  During passive MRMT techniques, the patient simply remains in a relaxed position while the therapist uses a fusion of massage modalities which may be combined with external applications of cold packs, moist heat or ointment to help reduce pain or stimulate circulation.  In general, the passive techniques you will experience are designed and intended to help reduce pain.

Active Restorative Function TechniquesTM require the patient to work along with the therapist in order to activate and manipulate specific muscles.  During an active technique, the patient may be asked to move their arm, leg or other body part in a certain manner while the therapist addresses specific muscles or muscle groups. In general, the active techniques you will experience are designed and intended to help restore physical function.

During both active and passive techniques, the patient and therapist are routinely communicating to make certain that the therapy is on track and that pain and discomfort are minimized throughout the entire process.  Throughout the process, the therapist also informs the patient of the soft tissue problems being addressed, and how each technique helps address each issue.

During and at the conclusion of each session, patients also learn about self-care techniques that can positively contribute to their plan of care and their long term well-being.  These practices are important tools in the battle to prevent or reduce reoccurrence of the patient's original dysfunction.
