What is Medical Restorative Massage Therapy®?

Medical Restorative Massage Therapy® is the advanced practice of:
  • Customizing care for patients with chronic pain,
  • Reducing pain and restoring physical function,
  • Through the blended application of active and passive massage therapy techniques,
  • Within the structure of a medical model.

Who can benefit from Medical Restorative Massage Therapy®?

Anyone experiencing pain, or living with diminished physical function is a welcome candidate for Medical Restorative Massage Therapy®.

What do you mean by diminished physical function?

Diminished physical function refers to lost or reduced abilities to perform routine activities that patients once took for granted.

Here are few examples:

  • Difficulty or inability to bend over and tie your shoes
  • Difficulty or inability put on or take off a sweater
  • Difficulty or inability to reach above your head
  • Difficulty or inability to rotate your torso, shoulders, feet or hands
  • Difficulty or inability to fully bend or fully extend your elbows, knees, or feet
  • Difficulty or inability to walk or jog without pain
  • Difficulty or inability to scratch your back
  • Difficulty or inability to swing a golf club or tennis racket

Will it hurt?  Is it painful?

The goal of Medical Restorative Massage Therapy® is to reduce pain and restore physical function.  Every certified therapist is trained to help minimize pain or discomfort throughout the course of each patient's therapy.

Our discipline of Medical Restorative Massage Therapy rejects the notion of "no pain no gain" often associated with other types or therapy.

How long will it take?

All Medical Restorative Massage Therapy® clinic treatments are sixty minute appointments.

How is Medical Restorative Massage Therapy® different from traditional massage?

Medical Restorative Massage Therapy® is a fundamentally different discipline than the traditional forms of massage therapy typically offered at health clubs, spas, chiropractic clinics, and other private clinics.

Even though "massage" is part of our discipline's identity, very little of what Certified Medical Restorative Massage Therapists do resembles traditional massage as it is practiced today in typical settings.

Some of the key differences include:

  • Our focus is on reducing pain and restoring physical function, not on relaxation.
  • We work within the structure of a medical model.  This means:
  • We assess before we treat,
  • We develop and follow a written plan of care, and
  • We document and chart each patient's progress.
  • We pride ourselves on consistency.  Every M. T. Wellness Clinic MRMT® therapist is a licensed massage therapist that has completed the same advanced training program, and each MRMT therapist must satisfy strict requirements to achieve their certifications.  For more information on MRMT certification requirements, click here.
  • We work on the muscles and body zones necessary to address the patient's condition.  We do not "chase the pain".  Our detailed assessment may identify  imbalances in other regions of the body that may contribute to the pain.  By addressing these issues and the effects of gravity on the body during routine activities, MRMT treatment improves quality of life by reducing pain and increasing function with long-term results.
  • We use a blended application of active and passive techniques to address the underlying conditions identified in our assessment.
  • We routinely educate our patients regarding their condition and their plan of care, and we continuously teach and coach self-care techniques that empower patients to manage their pain and improved physical function.
  • We work in a non-competitive team environment in which therapists support and consult with each other when faced with a challenging condition.
  • Our therapists work to be part of each patient's health care team, and we regularly communicate and consult with physicians and other health care specialists when treating our patients.
  • Our therapists are committed to life long learning, and they receive advanced training on  techniques, complex dysfunctions and treatment options from rehabilitation experts throughout the year.
What massage therapy techniques are used in Medical Restorative Massage Therapy®?

Medical Restorative Massage Therapy® involves a fusion of a wide range of established massage therapy techniques as well as innovative active techniques developed and perfected by M. T. Wellness senior therapists.

The discipline involves both passive techniques which are used to reduce pain, and active techniques, which are used to restore physical function.

What training programs are available for Medical Restorative Massage Therapy®?

The M. T. Wellness Training Center offers an integrated, structured, eighteen month training program that prepares aspiring therapists for State licensure in massage therapy and advanced certification in Medical Restorative Massage Therapy®.
